Jean-Michel Wilmotte (born in 1948 in Soissons) is one of the major figures in contemporary French architecture and design. A graduate of the École Camondo, he founded his interior architecture practice in 1975, before establishing Academy in 1976, a design house devoted to contemporary furniture. From the outset, he developed a comprehensive practice in which architecture, furniture, lighting, and scenography formed part of the same reflection on space.

At a time when Italian design was experiencing the rise of postmodernism, Jean-Michel Wilmotte pursued a more personal path. Without renouncing modernity, he drew on classical architecture, the French decorative arts, and craft traditions to create furniture of great formal rigour. His creations prioritise proportion, precision of detail, and the quality of materials over spectacular effects. This measured aesthetic would become one of the defining signatures of French design in the 1980s.

Through Academy, as well as public commissions supported by VIA and the cultural policies promoted during the 1980s, Jean-Michel Wilmotte created several now-emblematic collections, including Attila, Palmer, Washington, Élysée, and Palais-Royal. Produced in small series, they demonstrate a remarkable mastery of metal, wood, and stone, as well as an approach in which furniture is conceived as a natural extension of architecture.

At the same time, Jean-Michel Wilmotte developed an international career as an architect. He has designed museums, hotels, corporate headquarters, wineries, cultural institutions, and urban projects in more than twenty countries. His approach to contemporary insertion, integrating new architecture into existing heritage, has become one of the foundations of his practice. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 2015, he continues to develop a body of work in which architecture, urban planning, museography, and design constantly engage in dialogue.

While his architecture has largely contributed to his international renown, his work as a designer constitutes an essential chapter of his career. The furniture created between the late 1970s and the mid-1990s is now regarded among the major achievements of contemporary French design.
