Overview

"Kjaergaard deals in imagination and fantasy, creating female-centric paradigms in a non-utopian time. Showing movements is her forte- clear and striking"

Born in Denmark in 1974, Mie Olise Kjærgaard is a danish artist who has been exhibited internationally. She lives and works in Copenhagen. Kjærgaard works in painting, occasionally sculptural objects and installation. Earning her MFA from Central St. Martins in London in 2007, Olise is interested in society as a construction and the role of the woman as a construction.

Olise works in painterly strokes and large scales. Painting since the age of 15, she has experinced a long and winding journey – intitally starting out working with female figures with a feminist angle in her teens, a cycle that has been forming throughout her career.

Muses Having Fun* are paintings based on ideas of womanhood in history, art history and personal present life. In the works there are strong references to history; suffragettes, women who tore off their corsets to ride bikes, play tennis or music, as well as a series of paintings of a more fantastic scenery, with women (girls or witches) simply taking off on dangerous animals, being wild, fierce and adventurous. All figures living their lives as subjects, experiencing life from the inside and out.

Olise borrows many of the titles of her paintings from earlier works by women artists; the titles are picked out of hundreds, and suit the works; yet they also pay hommage to the female artists that paved the way for Olise.
