Overview
Born in the 90’s in Michigan, lives and works in New York.
Having a monomaniac personality, she was an intensely involved athlete for the entirety of her childhood. She then discovered painting and fiercely threw herself into this art form. Jo’s past in sports translated into an interest in figurative exploration; the contortion of the body seen in her work stems from this background. She dismantles the figure into form, background into color blocks and imagery into a coded language. There exists a play between control and the lack thereof in her work, both thematically and technically. The carefully rendered forms and masked areas contrasted with gestural stroke creates this juxtaposition. Jo Fish has shown her work internationally in places such as Ohio, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and New York City to name a few. Additionally, Jo has been an artist in residence with the R.A.R.O. International Artist Residency Program, the New York Arts Practicum Program and the New York Trestle Artist Residency Program.
