La Galerie Ketabi Bourdet est heureuse de consacrer une première exposition à l’artiste américaine Jo Fish.
Originaire du Michigan, Jo Fish vit aujourd’hui à New York où elle a bénéficié de plusieurs programmes de résidence. Son oeuvre, qui a fait l’objet d’expositions personnelles aux Etats-Unis (Detroit, Grand Rapids) mais également en Argentine (Buenos Aires) sera montrée pour la première fois en France à cette occasion, après une mise en lumière sur le stand de la galerie à Art Paris. Breaking Concrete rend compte de la production récente de l’artiste, qui se consacre à la peinture figurative, à travers un ensemble d’huiles sur toile et de dessins au pastel. 
 
Si la représentation du corps et son langage est au coeur de son travail et s’entoure d’objets tout aussi concrets qu’insolites, la peinture de Jo Fish sait en même temps être son propre sujet. L'artiste mêle les éléments traditionnels du portrait (figure humaine, arrière-plan, détails symboliques) en une imagerie expérimentale qui brouille la forme, le fond et le propos de ses compositions. Ainsi, de même que la scène est prétexte au déploiement de multiples gestes et régimes de peinture, c’est l’élasticité du corps se prêtant à toutes les contorsions qui intéresse l’artiste, découlant de son passé d’athlète de haut niveau. Jo Fish trouve notamment son inspiration dans l’univers semi-abstrait de De Kooning, où les formes anthropomorphiques s’enchevêtrent avec un réseau sous-jacent de couches de peinture. 

Le travail de l’artiste se rapporte ainsi au collage : les silhouettes imbriquées, désarticulées et littéralement rapiécées ont pour matière et origine ce mélange de styles. Traits vigoureux, aplats tout en transparence, dégradés, motifs, volumes géométriques, fondus chromatiques exacerbent les effets de contraste, en prenant soin de ménager des espaces de respiration. Cet éclatement pictural confère un caractère brut, primitif à ces personnages qui peut faire écho à la radicalité des sculptures peintes de Baselitz, quand les acrobaties du dessin et l’affranchissement des proportions renvoient plutôt au cubisme de Picasso (en particulier celui des « Baigneurs » auxquels les tenues aux allures sportives présentes dans les dessins font par ailleurs penser).A travers les zones de vide et de plein un agencement spatial peut être simplement et efficacement suggéré par quelques lignes de force ou surfaces colorées, jouant avec l’idée de perspective. Quelques détails font par ailleurs allusion à une pièce, un lieu ou un moment, avec une économie rafraichissante.
 
Aussi, il y a dans ces différences de traitement la volonté de contrôler davantage certaines zones de peinture, détaillées, travaillées, et d’en soumettre d’autres à un rendu aléatoire, vaporeux, gestuel. De même, derrière la précision des objets peints se cache le désir de laisser chacun s’approprier l’oeuvre à sa guise. Jo Fish s’inscrit ainsi dans la lignée du surréalisme dont elle tient son goût pour l’incongru, l’énigmatique et le symbolique. Notons : une pizza, l’étonnante récurrence d’un pot de fleurs, un ketchup, une banane, autant d’éléments banals et universels prenant place avec un naturel déconcertant.
 
Jo Fish révèle le potentiel athlétique des corps en même temps que celui de la peinture figurative, qu’elle maximise, tord et questionne. Son oeuvre est instruite de nombreuses références picturales qui, plutôt que de l’empeser, nourrissent son originalité.

Ketabi Bourdet is pleased to introduce its first exhibition of American artist Jo Fish. Originally from Michigan, Jo Fish now lives in New York City where she has benefited from several residency programs. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in the United States (Detroit, New York City...etc) as well as locations such as Argentina (Buenos Aires). For the first time, her work will be shown in France on this occasion, after being highlighted on the gallery's stand at the Art Paris art fair this year. Breaking Concrete presents the artist's most recent work, which is centered on figurative painting, through a series of oils on canvas and oil pastel drawings.

The representation of the body and its idiom is at the heart of the artist's work - she surrounds her figures with objects that are as tangible as they are unusual. Jo Fish's paintings prove to hold their ground as their own subject. The artist blends the traditional elements of portraiture(human figure, background, symbolic details) into an experimental imagery that blurs the form, content and purpose of composition. Thus, just as the canvas is a vehicle for the deployment of multiple gestures and painting patterns, it is the elasticity of the body, yielding to all contortions, that interests the artist, stemming from her background as an athlete. Jo Fish finds inspiration in the semi-abstract world of De Kooning, where anthropomorphic forms are entangled with an underlying network of layers of paint.

The artist's work is also closely tied to collage: this combination of techniques is both the source and the subject of the interlocking, disjointed and literally patched together silhouettes. Vigorous strokes, flat surfaces with transparency, gradations, motifs, geometric volumes and chromatic fades exacerbate the effects of contrast, while ensuring there are still spaces left for the eye to breathe. This pictorial explosion confers a raw, primitive quality where characters echo the radicalism of Baselitz's painted sculptures, the gesture both acrobatic in nature and in content along with the freedom of proportions refer to Picasso's cubism (in particular that of the "Bathers" to which the sportswear present in the drawings is also reminiscent).

Through the zones of emptiness and fullness, a spatial arrangement can be simply and effectively suggested by a few powerful lines or colored surfaces, playing with the idea of perspective. Some details allude to a room, a place or a time, with a refreshing simplicity.

In these different approaches there is also a desire to control certain areas of painting, more detailed and refined, while leaving others to a random, vaporous, gestural rendering. In the same way, behind the precision of the painted objects hides the desire to let each of us appropriate the work as we please. Jo Fish is therefore in line with surrealism, from which she draws her taste for the incongruous, the enigmatic and the symbolic. A pizza, the astonishing recurrence of a flower pot, a ketchup bottle and a banana, mark these many banal and universal elements which appear with a surprising naturalness.

Jo Fish reveals the athletic potential of the bodies at the same time as that of figurative painting, which she maximizes, twists and questions. Her work is informed by numerous pictorial references which, rather than weighing her down, feed her originality.
