PENCK STARCK

A dialogue between A.R. Penck’s ceramics and Philippe Starck’s radical designs

A.R. Penck and Philippe Starck: two singular figures of the 1980s and 1990s, brought together through an unexpected dialogue between art and design. This publication accompanies PENCK / STARCK, an exhibition at Ketabi Bourdet in Paris, organised in collaboration with Vincent Fraikin. Bringing together a selection of Penck’s painted ceramics and rare furniture and design pieces by Starck, it explores the affinities between two practices that challenge the boundaries between function, form and artistic expression. Penck’s pictograms and distinctive visual language extend into three-dimensional objects, while Starck’s radical designs transform everyday furniture into sculptural statements. Although the two never met, their works share a spirit of experimentation, freedom and provocation. Through this encounter, the publication offers a fresh perspective on the intersections between contemporary art and collectible design.
